Book Review: Mary Kay on People Management by Mary Kay Ash

If you're in the business world, you've likely heard of the legendary Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay, Inc. And even if you aren't in the business world, you have probably still heard of her. She was named the Greatest Female Entrepreneur in American History, and rightfully so.

Mary Kay Ash began her cosmetics company in a time when it wasn't common for women to do such bold things. She had just retired from a 25-year career in direct sales and determined that she was completely capable of starting a company that would build women up from the inside and out. With a dream in her heart and God by her side, she invested $5,000 into a cosmetics company with a small storefront in Dallas, TX. Today, Mary Kay, Inc. is a multi-million dollar company, ranking as one of the top producers and sellers of skin care and color cosmetics.

Don't let the product fool you -- Mary Kay was a g-l-a-m-o-r-o-u-s woman, but she was also fierce, driven, and kind. She knew what she wanted and she was bound and determined to get it, but she refused to step on people to climb the ladder of success. Instead, she would link arms with those around her, buckle down, and GET. IT. DONE.

With that being said, this book is far from an easy read. She will (kindly but firmly) make you check yourself on how you interact with and treat others. She tells stories of her career in direct sales when people were utterly rude and downright hateful and how it made her feel not only as an employee, but as a person. And instead of taking out her hurt on someone else, she flipped the script and used those experiences to make sure she always treated others with the utmost respect and grace.

If I could put the contents of this book into one sentence, it's this: "Make people feel loved." Mary Kay Ash always wanted to make each and every person feel important, and she tells her readers exactly how to do that in and out of the office in Mary Kay on People Management. Whether she is planning an office party, an awards banquet, or even just a one-on-one meeting with an employee, Mary Kay went above and beyond to show how much she appreciated each person she encountered. She created a culture of love and respect at Mary Kay, Inc. that lives on in the millions of consultants who make up the sales force.

And that, my friends, is the power of one. One woman can, so one woman did.

xoxo, Erin
