New Year, New Season?

Hello, January, hello 2020!

Hello, January 2020!

I feel a sense of freshness as we embark on this new journey. It’s like a fresh snow that hasn’t been disrupted by our footprints. It feels like we’re sucking in a deep breath as we awaken into a new season.

We have these couch covers on our hand-me-down couches that come untucked and every time we sit on them. Our whole house could be neat as a pin, but if we haven't tucked in the couch covers, it looks like a tornado went through the living room. But once we tuck them in and smooth them over, they seem brand new. You would never know that just a few seconds ago, they were more like throw blankets than couch covers. It's just like our new year, our new month, our new decade. You'd never know that the last season was difficult because of the beauty of the next one. For many of us, this year will also be a new season. But then again, it may not be.

I’ve heard that we live in 90-day cycles, and I’ve found that to be true. But seasons aren’t always a perfect 90-day cycle the way our weather seasons are. Our life seasons can last just a few weeks or they can continue for months or years. And just because one season was short doesn’t mean the next one will be long. They don’t follow a specific pattern that I can see. But what I can see is that January 2020 marks the beginning of something new and different for all of us.

What season are you in?

As I look back on the last year (and even the last few months), it seems I was in a season of learning. Learning how to be a wife, learning how to adjust to a new home, learning to make time for the household chores and the grocery shopping (which my husband is amazing at helping me with), and all that comes with being a newlywed. It was also a season of learning to be disciplined and learning the consequences of not following through on what I had planned. It was learning to step out of what I thought was my “comfort zone” into a group of people more comforting than I ever imagined. I learned that what I thought was best was not always best.

And now, it’s a season of application. I won’t just be applying what I’ve learned to do, but I’ll be applying what I’ve learned not to do. I’ll set goals, but I’ll make them more specific. I’ll start new projects with then intent of finishing them. I’ll quit bad habits with the intent of replacing them with better ones. It’s not always going to be easy, but it will be better.

When you enter a season, you leave another. Leave your brokenness but take the pieces. You’ll need them.

xoxo, Erin
