Promise Keeper

How many times have we asked God to do something and then not believed Him when He promised us He would provide? One of the sweetest and yet most difficult concepts for us to grasp as members of the Kingdom is that our King keeps His promises. Always. No exceptions.

In John 4, there is a short story of Jesus healing an official's son:

So he came again to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. And at Capernaum there was an official whose son was ill. When this man heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. So Jesus said to him "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe." The official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus said to him, "Go; your son will live." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering. So he asked them the hour when he began to get better, and they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him." The father knew that was the hour when Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." And he himself believed, and all his household. - John 4: 46-53

I think the most profound moment in this story is when the official believed the words Jesus said. At first, he wanted Jesus to physically come with him to work the miracle. The official wanted it to go according to his own plan. But there's a surprise ending when we surrender our preferences and allow Him to work.

All Jesus had to do was say the boy would be healed and it happened. The moment the words came off the lips of our Healer and Redeemer, the sickness began to flee. But the official didn't know the miracle had happened already. It wasn't until the next day that he found out that his son's fever had broken. He may not have seen Jesus lay hands on his son, but the miracle happened just the same. He put his faith in what he couldn't see and then he saw the fruit of his faith.

When it doesn't go according to our plan, we doubt that it will turn out in our favor. We think Jesus needs to come with us on an entire day's journey to heal our son, but He doesn't. It's not that complicated for God. All we have to do is believe the words He says and we will see a miracle happen. After all, He is a Promise Keeper.

xoxo, Erin
