September: A Month in Limbo

The moment the clock struck midnight on September 1st, the sweaters, the boots, and the pumpkin recipes awoke from their slumber. The cozy crispness of fall made excitement rise up in our hearts and we flung open the doors ready to sprint to Starbucks for the first PSL of the season -- yet we were met by the same sweltering heat of August.

Did that stop us? Heck no! We shed our cardigans, shimmied off our jeans to swap them for shorts, and found ourselves lost in the seasonal section of Hobby Lobby while sipping on that hot, cinnamon-y goodness.

It seems as if we're hanging in limbo as we leave one season full of sunbathing and late nights and enter another season full of snuggling up and spending time with loved ones. And although we're still wearing swimwear and soaking up the last of the summer rays, we're also decorating our homes with leaf garlands and making sure our flannel collections are fully stocked. We're hanging on to the last bit of one season while anticipating and preparing for the next.

We tend to do this in seasons of life, too. Think about it: spending that last summer with your high school friends before going off to college; going out with your girlfriends just before tying the knot; spending quiet nights at home with your spouse just before your first child is born; having one last pool party before the tan lines fade. It's like it's in our DNA.

Sometimes, letting go of a season can be difficult -- it can even be downright painful. You may lose touch with friends as they go back to campus. You might abandon projects that never got off the ground. You might even have to reprioritize your entire life.

Entering a new season can be just as scary, especially with so many unknowns and questions that haven't been answered yet. You might be heading into your dream job with coworkers who have more knowledge and experience than you. Maybe you're entering a season of long-distance as your significant other finishes a degree. Or maybe God has called you into something you never saw yourself doing, and you're feeling unqualified and ill-equipped for the task.

What gives me comfort in times of uncertainty is this: as good as summer was, there is even better to come in autumn. If we are pursuing God, seeking Him first and allowing Him to lead us, we will be able to look back on our past seasons with fondness rather than regret and dive headfirst into our new seasons with excitement and anticipation. He will always guide us in the right direction.

So enjoy your September. Don't worry about what is being left behind in summer or what's to come in autumn. Be still in the limbo, and know that the best is yet to come.

xoxo, Erin
