Tailor Made

The other day, I posted a picture of jeans that I cropped myself. Well, there's actually a story behind those jeans.

I’m only 5’2”, so jeans are always too long on me. I always have to roll them up or get them in the “short” size (which isn’t always available). And on top of that, it’s really difficult to find jeans that fit nicely and are good quality.

I found a pair of American Eagle jeans at a discount store, and they were not only marked down to $10, but there was another 50% off the clearance items -- making them a whopping $5. I bought them figuring they wouldn’t fit and I would have to return them, but to my surprise, they fit PERFECTLY. Except, you guessed it... they were too long.

Then I got the idea that I would just crop them myself and leave them raw hemmed. That look is in right now and I didn’t have any raw hemmed jeans in my wardrobe. I got excited, but then I got scared.

I’ve always had a fear of cutting and altering clothes. I’m afraid I’ll mess up and ruin what I had spent my time and money on, and the clothing would be wasted. So the first time I wore the jeans, I just rolled them up like I normally do. I liked them, but I didn't love them. They just didn't fit right. I decided they would probably wind up in the bottom of a giant stack of jeans that I liked but didn't fit quite right. They were only $5, anyway. Then I got to thinking...

Wasn't I wasting these jeans by NOT cutting them? Why own a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit quite right? The second time I had planned on wearing them, I decided I would take the plunge and cut them first.

So, with no hesitation, I put on the jeans, measured where I wanted them to be cut off, and promptly trimmed 4 inches off the bottom. When I put them on again, I couldn’t believe how much more comfortable they were. It was as if they were tailor made for me.

Friend, there's no need to settle for what doesn't fit you when God has something He has made specifically for you. It can be difficult, scary even, to give up what you think is the best thing you could ever have to make room for the unknown. Just like I was scared to cut 4 inches off a pair of perfectly good jeans, sometimes we are scared to make changes because we're afraid to ruin a good thing.

But when you hand it over to God and allow Him to tweak it, change it, or even replace it completely, that's when you begin living the life God created for you.

xoxo, Erin
